In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Athena and Artemis are mentioned together with the Okeanides as companions of Persephone. They were probably seen as fitting company for Persephone because they too were unmarried virgins, but I've always had a hard time to picture Athena and Artemis going around and picking flowers. It makes more sense if they were there to protect Persephone. Anyway, I've known for a long time that there would be some kind of friendship between these three goddesses, but since they are quite different from each other (and since my version of Persephone is quite antisocial) I couldn't quite imagine them as best friends. It's the circumstances that more or less forces Persephone to befriend them.

Awww. I really love your versions of them. The social awkwardness is perfect for such lofty beings. I think your version of Persephone is my favourite of any.

This comic is making me impatient and anxious when it comes to getting a passport so that I can go to Greece for a two week field study/vacation for some of my own comics and projects. Know any good spots to visit for getting a good feel for the history, mythos and culture there?

@redandblack64:
I've only been to Greece once and then I went to Crete. I lived on the north-east coast, between the towns of Hersonisos and Stalida, and from there it was pretty close to the remains of the palace of Knossos and Malia, and to the city of Herakleion with its archaeological museum. There are also many exciting caves to visit on Crete. I joined a jeep safari up in the mountains that made a stop at the Psychro Cave, which has been a place of worship since Minoan times (and according to one tradition was the birthplace of Zeus).

But I think that Athens also would be a good place to go. It is there I want to go next. I guess it depends a bit what your comic is about.

I actually really like how Athena and Persephone have that bit in common, a sort of detachment from traditional femininity that others would find weird or be uncomfortable with but is just part of who they are. :)
